HDDs vs SSDs in 2026 — When Mechanical Disks Still Win
SSDs have won the gaming and OS-drive category outright. Mechanical hard drives are still the right answer for a specific category that nobody talks about.
Category is bulk cold storage. At late-April 2026 pricing, a 20TB Seagate IronWolf Pro lands at $329, vs roughly $1,400 for a 20TB SSD. For backup, archival, media storage, and any workload that does not require sub-millisecond access, the price gap is decisive.
Other case is sustained-write large-file workloads. Modern enterprise HDDs hit 280 MB/s sustained write — slower than SSD peak but faster than SSD sustained on most consumer drives once SLC cache exhausts. For 4K video archive, this matters.
SSD for OS, games, productivity. HDD for cold storage and 4K archive at $/TB ratios SSDs cannot touch. Both belong in modern builds.
